In May 1940, Germany advanced into France, trapping Allied troops on the beaches of Dunkirk. With their backs to the sea they face an impossible situation as the enemy closes in. Under air and ground cover from British and French forces, troops were slowly and methodically evacuated from the beach using every serviceable naval and civilian vessel that could be found. At the end of this heroic mission, 330,000 French, British, Belgian and Dutch soldiers were safely evacuated.
*Continuing the legacy begun by his use of the 15 perf 65mm IMAX® cameras in The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises and Interstellar, Christopher Nolan is once again capturing material and key sequences of Dunkirk using IMAX® cameras. These specific sequences will expand vertically to fill our massive (23m in height) IMAX screen sheet, delivering unprecedented crispness and clarity and a truly immersive experience for moviegoers.
IMAX Melbourne installed the latest generation IMAX LASER projection system in September 2015, removing the original IMAX 1570 Film Projector that had served us so well since the theatre opened in 1998. The 1570 Film Projector will be reinstalled for a limited season of DUNKIRK and more information on this format can be found HERE
